Wino - Like you, Mrs. Rinard did send me around the bend a few times but I do have to credit her with arming me with a fairly decent preparation for college English courses.
I used to think teaching was easy until I was asked about 16 years ago to teach a financial course to working professionals. I figured it would be a breeze until I began to prepare and ask myself what I would expect from an alleged expert in the subject.
By the time I finished preparing and finally delivered the course, I had a "whole 'nother perspective" on teachers, God bless 'em. Doing it well takes real work, skill, and a heck of a lot of preparation, as I'm sure you know having lived with one of our nation's best for more years than she probably cares to remember.
My respect for good teachers continued to rise as I took on the duties of Cubmaster for three years. The skill it takes to control a bunch of 6-10 year olds is something I never quite mastered, but I was improving. After every meeting, I drove home twitching and made a beeline for the liquor cabinet where I poured myself a huge tumbler of Jameson and soda.
Come to think about it, you and I and several others in College Prep English didn't behave much differently from those much younger Cub Scouts and we probably deserved every rap on the knuckles we got from the likes of Lindsley (I never realized that was her name either.)
By the way, I don't know if our classmates know it but Wino's better half was named one of the nation's top 50 high school science teachers a few years back and was honored with a meeting with the President in the Oval Office. I think they even let Wino attend. |
