Message:   "Hotter than Billy-be-****ed," is an expression Dad used to use a lot. That's kind of how we feel around here come August/September. Still air. 99% humidity. 99 degrees. Heat rising from all the concrete and asphalt (we used to have a lot more trees but developments clear-cut them - a real shame).

The good news is that fall around here is long and glorious with crisp, cool air, lots of leaves turning, and the best time to tour the area after the summer tourists are gone.

After work in the summer, I often see families trudging up 23rd Street hill on their way back up from the Mall and the memorials. They almost all look spent, straggled out in lines, pushing stroller, carrying kids, sweat pouring off the parents who are lugging kids and other stuff. I wonder how many of them realize how hot DC is in the summer.

Speaking of hot places. Marsha - you are in the Sacramento area, right? Are the fires heating things up even more or have they begun to play out?
