My wife did some research some time ago, upon noticing that my waterproof pants (not so much the diapers) retained an odor. She found a suggestion (I assume on a diapering site for infants) to utilize baking soda, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide in a pail to soak the pants. I do this, and rinse them in clear water...voila, no odor!
I also use the same solution in my diaper pail, which seems to limit odors while the diapers are in the pail. I wash with small amount of normal detergent, some borax, a small amount of bleach, and vinegar in the rinse cycle. Again, no odors.
