Difficult question! Contrary to the opinion of some of you bums this is the forst question grant has posted that I haven't known off the top of my head. I have checked with "Darts Historian" Patrick Chaplin however and the answer is: "It was standardized in the 1970s when the BDO formulated their rules so that would make it c.1974." Keep 'em coming! |

Interesting. If the mid-seventies is correct that means I've seen some rubber darts mats that have been around for a while. The ones I'm referring to were just a basic rubber mat that had a few standard distance oche lines painted on them. Must have been at least four different lines - one that was standard distance specially for women. Seem to remember Wild Country having one of these some years ago? Anyone else remember this or did I just have one too many again on one of those very rare occasions?

I remember them too Johnny, used to have them in nearly every bar in England. Was going to ask at one time if the ladys distance was the same as the mens now because I remembered the different distances marked out on the matt That would of been around the 70's

ANSWER: No one has got it precisely but I have to say, through a process of some fairly spectacular lateral thinking and elimination you guys got pretty close - but not close enough... 30 years (31 years in December 2008). Only in December 1977 did the World Darts Federation recommend a throwing distance for 7ft 9 1/4in. Before then there were many different rules: South Africa 9 feet: Nottingham 6 feet: Norfolk 6ft 6in: Newcastle 7ft 3in: Stoke 7ft 1in. Some Norfolk leagues threw from 6' 11.9" (Why this length? because at this distance it is exactly 9 feet, diagonally, from the oche to the bull). I was really surprised myself at how recent this distance was determined - geez, I must be getting old... Azerbaijan !?! Now that's a good Google search! |

Harry -- I apologize for calling you all bums. It was a comment made in jest and I would think that would be obvious, just as my comment some time back (which you called me out on) about Pookie was intended to be complimentary. Give me a break. |

Accepted but try to remember in future we are trying to get players to join the league, and they are hardly likely to do that if they get the impression we are all drop outs, are they. See you soon,no problem,I know what it is like writing after a night out CHEERS

No problem Harry. Truth be known, it's me who is the bum. I will clean up my act and to be respectable will even wear a tie my first night of darts in November. See you then! |
