It has been a few years since we have had some really great perch fishing in the Upper Niagara River, but it seems to be coming back this Fall. Catches have been excellent this past week throughout the river and over into Canadian waters with typical catches of 30 or more per angler on ringbacks in the 9-11" range. La Salle Park, Ontario Street, and the weedbeds around Beaver, Strawberry, and Motor Islands have been some of the more mentioned spots. A mixed bag of perch and crappies are showing up at the Sandpiles. Limits catches are still turning up from Pt. Abino to Crystal Beach in 20 feet of water for anglers with Ontario licenses. In the open lake, Cattaraugus Creek is the spot when the weather cooperates. The best reports before the east winds came out of 62 feet straight off the mouth and east towards Sturgeon Point. Shiners continue to be the top bait and are in supply at Big Catch in Buffalo and Millers in Irving...........More of Jim Markham's reports can be viewed on the Outdoors Niagara website....Go to Bill Hilts Jr. Column and scroll down... |
