LARGE MOUTH Bass fishing - How good is it?
If Friday and Saturday are any indication for the rest of the summer, bass fishin is going to be super this year. Since we stocked Steelhead on Monday (21st), I have been watching the East Branch of 12 mile creek. I saw a lot of large mouth bass swimming around in the stream. Friday I tried to catch some of them. I tried everything in my box and then tried one more thing. It was the right one. I caught 16 large mouth on Friday evening in 2 hours. I lost approx 5. I landed and released unharmed 16 bass, some 16inchers and some 13. Then Saturday I went back to the same spot and fished in the morning until it rained and then went back down later and fished until 6:15 pm. I ended up landing 48 largemouth bass and hooked but lost 15 more. Two of those were stripping line off my open faced reel and then they unhooked. I did not get a look at them. Some jumped and spit the hook. All the ones I landed were released unharmed. These fish are swimming back and forth in the creek in schools. Some have as many as 30 fish in them. I tried to take a picture of every fish I caught but my hand got tired of holding them up for the picture. My thumb was so sore from lipping them, it was raw and I had to put a bandaid on it. I have never caught that many fish at one time. I tried it again this morning and all I got was two bites and they didn't hang on to it. No luck today so far. I will go back down later and try it again. The cool weather last night may of had something to do with it. THIS MAY BE A VERY GOOD YEAR FOR FISHING.. Terry |

Be careful. You're not supposed to be targeting bass out of season. The DEC officer would not be too happy. But it is great to hear that the bass population is thriving so well. thanks for the updates in Wilson. Keep 'em comin'

I believe that you can target bass for catch and release fishing as long as you use artificial lures only. Forgot to mention that you're not supposed to use live bait to target them out of season.

GREAT OBSERVATION! Regulations from the NYS DEC website: "Fishing opportunities for black bass (largemouth bass and smallmouth) will be expanded across most of New York State by establishing a catch-and-release, artificial lures only season from December 1 through the third Friday in June" Then, the third Saturday in June is full tilt! [June 21] The Opening Day of the Wagon Wheel Bass contest!.....Look for the Outdoors Niagara/A-1 Bait Big Bass contest in August [August 2]The river moss should be all cleared by then. Walleye contest to follow shortly after that. Stay Tuned. "Be an Outdoors Niagara Booster"

I had already double checked the regulations before I started fishing for the bass. I was pretty well informed, since I use to sell Licenses at Ed's Bait Shop. |
