Sled dog in the Military
209 sled dogs and 17 drivers were transported by plane to France and Belgium, during the "Battle of the Bulge" in Europe. The sled dog teams were used to evacuate the wounded in deep snow mountainous battle areas. The sled dog teams are credited on saving many lives. All the teams were supervised by Col. Norman Vaughan. Col. Norman Vaughan was also responsible for supervising 425 sled dogs in teams stationed in Newfoundland, Labrador, Greenland, Canada and the state of Maine. In 1942, Col. Norman Vaughan joined the United States Air Force (Army Air Corps). When officials learned of his extensive experience training sled dogs, he became a ground officer. From that point on,Col. Norman Vaughan was training sled dogs and or was on assignments where dogs were being used. If not on assignments or training, he was at the Pentagon. The North Atlantic Division of the Air Transport Command used sled dogs for Search and Rescue. |
