Winter Snow Camping
9 of the 4-H members have just completed a wilderness back country snow camping training course. we learned to build snow shelters and caves, cut and build snow blocks for a wind block. We spent the night up at Hatcher Pass on the Gold - Mint Glacier trail. The Temperature was very cold on Friday morning, just around -15 below, our instructors were very good about keeping us moving at all times. But they didn't allow us to build a fire. By Friday evening it had warmed up to -5 below and started to light fluffy snow. We learned to start different kinds of camp stoves, melt snow and cook different kinds of food that are easy when it is so cold. We kept melting snow to keep hot water around so we could have hot coco. The hot coco tasted sooo good when we were sooo cold. We had to really work to keep warm. We wore lots of layers of clothing. We also took a few of the sled dogs with us. Some of the dogs pulled sleds to carry the gear in to where we camped. But the park service did not allow us to have the dogs in the back country with us over night, so they had to spend the night in the dog boxes in the parking area. The youngest member (5 week old puppy) hated the cold, but spent his time warmly with his mom. We made shelters with some of the dog sleds we had. We kept all the layers of our clothes and got in the sleeping bags and all of us spent the whole night out in the shelters. We stayed pretty warm, but some of us got cold towards the morning. The next morning, after breakfast, our instructors taught us about how to use a topographical map, read the contour lines and to orient the map using a compass. They also taught us about avalanche safety and how to look at the layers and quality of snow. They touched on how to use GPS, but we didn't go into detail. By lunch time all of us were cold and hungry, so that was the end of the class.
