learning about dogsledding
I am interested in learning about dogsledding. I am 9yrs old and am in 3rd grade. I wondered if you had any book recc. or other info. What kind of dogs you like best? Why do you prefer that dog? What would be best for a beginner? What is an easy breed to work with? I have some books ordered from the library and would like any other info or tips from experienced mushers. thanks, Zeb |

Hi, Zeb It is great that you are interested in dog mushing. We have all talk about the questions you have for us. The kind of dogs that can be used; any medium to even large dogs of any breed can be used to help you learn how to mush. They do need to like to pull, run, and still you can handle them with out to much trouble. My name is Jonathan Biggerstaff/Myers, I am 11 years old and in 5th grade. I started out with retired sled dogs. They are very good, because they are trained, they like to pull and run, but are on the slow side (sometimes!!). But they don't mind having to be harnessed, if I make a mistake, they will most of the time let me, keep trying until I can make it work. Most of us run Alaska Huskies. Some of the breeds that are easier to work with are Alaska Huskies, Golden retrievers, Labs, Siberian Huskies (they can be escape artists), malamutes. Alot of the family pets can be helpful in learn to harness, alot of the members go home and learn on there family pets. It really help if they are calm. They would be easier for a beginner musher. After you have learn the basics you then can move up to fast, and more active breeds and are faster!! The more active breeds are harder to learn on, like pointers (will trained hunting,or anything that they need to be trained could be a good dog). They don't also like to hold still. Younger dogs can be harder do to more energy, and they are also learning. Some of the Books that we use are: Mush by:Training by Sierra Nevada Dog Drivers Inc and Bella Levorsen, Dog Driver By: Miki Collins and Julie Collins - This is a guide for the serious Mushers, but has very good information. The Mushing Magazine has good information for even for the beginner. We go on alot of field trips to other dog mushers and there kennels and have speakers that help us also learn. Can you visit a dog musher?, or even ask to help with his/her team! There is alot of information on the web. www.sleddogcenter.com - Have alot of information and different links, they even have schedule for different events that are around the World. On our website we have a few links with information. We would be happy to help you and can send you information if you would like. Most of our learning is by hands on, but we do have some written work. Our leader can send the information throw the email. We hope we have helped you. Thank you for contacting us. We will look forward to hearing from you soon!! Good Luck!! From the Little Su 4-H Club Members Alaska 4-H Dog Mushing Program |
