Junior Cantwell Classic Sled Dog Race
I am 13 years old and this is my 4th year with the Little Su 4-H Club, and 2nd year of sled dog racing. I just finished the Junior Cantwell Classic Sled Dog Race, which was held on Januray 13th. This was my first distance race, and I drove a team of 8 dogs for 60 miles. It took me 10 hours including a lay over of about an hour and 20 minutes. I think I ran my dogs a little hard on the way out. I had to drop a dog at the half way check point because his harness had rubbed him raw under one of his front legs. Other than that, all the dogs ran really well, and I was very impressed with them. The last three hours of the race were in the dark and I got a little scared out there all alone with the dogs, but they brought me to the finish line safe and sound. The next morning, one of my leaders had very sore paws, but she recovered well after a good rest. I had so much fun that I want to do this again next year. My leader, my mom, and many other people made it possible for me to run this race, and I want to thank everyone for such an incredible experience! |
