Cantwell Classic
On January 13 I ran the Junior Cantwell Classic Sled dog race. I had great fun and I think my dogs did too. I am hoping to run the race again next year too! I only had one small problem with a dog named george. About one mile from the checkpoint on the way back he decided that he didn't want to race any more and he layed down in the middle of the trail. I got him in the sled then a couple miles down the trail he chose to try to jump out of the sled and so I put him back in the line and he ran okay for a while then he decided to lay down again so I put him in the sled and he slept there untill about two miles from the finish he jumped out again!!! I put him in the line and in a few minutes he and luke both chose to start dragging on their collars but I made them run to the finish. I made it in a little less than ten hours and I placed eighth

Congratulation! 8th Place for the first time is great. You have many more years to race, you are only 13 years old. It sounds like your dogs were tired. Could you not drop the dog George? Did you give small rest stops or some light snacks to your dog team coming back? That is what I do when I am racing, it really helps from getting so tired, and help there spirits. I know from exprience that this helps. You think that will put you further behind in the race, but it in the long run it helps the speed of the dogs, they will last longer and would have had more energy at the end of the race when all the rest of the teams are very tired. I would also try and put more miles on the dogs, but if you didn't have the miles, this will really help your team I also know this from exprience many, many time learned over!!! You should be very happy with yourself to have such a great exprience, I wish I had the opportunity when I was younger. I learned as adult. It is wonderful that you have a leader that is willing to teach you and also just even to take the time to help teach Jr. mushers. Please keep up the good work. I will be watching on how you and all the Jr. 4-H Club mushers are doing. I wish you very good luck, and hands up for all the great work you are doing with your time. Sincerely, Concerned Musher

One problem that I had was getting them to stay stopped. They kept popping the hook and I couldn't hold them. thanks for the advice!! Oh. George decided he didn't want to go after the checkpoint but now I realize that I could have gone back to drop him if I had thought about it during the race. Thanks again for the advice! Mere
