Joseph Coppoc, Iowa Infantry Major.

Ann Raley, Quaker mother and abolitionist, raised six children in Springdale, Iowa in the 1850's. Her eldest son, Levi, daughter's Maria and Lydia all died of consumption. Edwin Coppoc was hung with John Brown for the Harper's Ferry raid in 1859, Barclay Coppoc escaped, became a lieutenant in the 3rd Kansas Volunteers and was killed in the collapse of the Platte River Bridge in September 1861. Ann's final and youngest child, Joseph Coppoc avoided some of this tragedy but led an interesting life. He apparently participated in the UGGR and forcibly removed slaves from Missouri to Kansas in the late 1850's. He joined an Iowa infantry regiment as third corporal at the beginning of the Civil War and rose to Major by the end of the war.

What was the regiment and does anyone have any material on this interesting person?

Thanks

Re: Joseph Coppoc, Iowa Infantry Major.

There was a Joseph L. Coppoc, age 21 at enlistment on Sept. 27, 1861, as Third Corporal in G company 13th Iowa Infantry. Mustered Oct. 28, 1861. Promoted Second Corporal April 30, 1862. Discharged
for promotion as Captain of company D, Eighth Louisiana Colored Infantry, June 5, 1863. Maybe they made him a major in the 8th LA.

Clark.... That would be it. Joe Coppoc was the youngest brother to those well-known John Brown partisans at Harper's Ferry, Edwin and Barclay Coppoc!

Re: Joseph Coppoc, Iowa Infantry Major.

Just ran across this thread while researching. The reply with military service was correct. After the war, Joseph Coppoc was ordained as a Baptist Minister where he served several communities, including Spirit Lake, IA. If you wat more on the Coppoc family, email me at jcoppoc@iastate.edu.
