Hello,

I was at Duke University last week and spent time going through the multitude of diaries kept by Eugene Marshall of the 5th Iowa Cavalry. He was one of the men from Minnesota that formed this regiment.

If anyone is doing work with this unit and they do not use this fine source, they are missing a great deal of wonderful information! There are nearly 20 books in this collection!

If the Diaries are held by Duke, the copyright belongs to Duke, unless they were retained is some way by the donor. The fair use doctrine would allow small excerpts to be published, provided that it is properly cited, but dissemination of the entire work, ar a substantial portion of it, would clearly be a major copyright violation under Federal law.
