William Guild Lehigh, who was a private with the 40th Iowa Infantry, died of disease (measles/cold) at the Camp Pope Regimental Hospital on November 16, 1862. I have tried everything (National Archives, etc.)to find out were he might be buried but cannot locate anything.

I was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion where he might be buried at. One thing that runs in my mind, is that since he died of disease they might have buried him around Camp Pope (Note: His family/wife is from the Knoxville, IA area).

I aleady have all his military records from the National Archives and they do not mention where he is buried or where he might be buried.

Any thought and suggestions would be helpfull.

Have you been able to rule out burial back home? It would not have been overly difficult to have his remains brought home at or shortly after death.

If buried in Iowa City, I think it's unlikely he would have been buried right around Camp Pope, since they were in a city with at least one large public cemetery (Oakland) and other private ones. The military authorities likely arranged with local leadership to bury soldiers (I'm sure there were other soldier deaths). Have you checked Oakland's interment records?

NOTE: I did check around the Knoxville area and could not find out any information on his buriel there.

You might check an obituary for a Francis Marion Lehigh born 1847 died 1 Oct 1923 buried Columbia Cemetery Marion County Iowa. It may be in the 6 Oct 1923 of the Knoxville Express. This from the WPA Graves records of the 1930's. If the Knoxville paper doesn't have a copy the Iowo Historical Library in Des Moines has copies of old newspapers on microfilm. You might get someone there to look it up for you. Some times there is mention of relatives on the obituary.
