Samuel Moore, Iowa, killed 1863 during Civil War

My ggg grandfather, Samuel Wilson Moore, (then from Black Hawk Co., Iowa) was supposedly killed in 1863 while serving with the Union forces in the Civil War. I've been trying for years to find out the exact date and location of his death, but haven't had much luck.

The only Samuel Moore from Iowa who was killed in 1863 that I can find enlisted in Highland, Clayton Co., Iowa some 40 to 50 miles from Black Hawk Co. This individual was listed as being 23 years of age and was born in Pennsylvania. My relative ws about 38 years old and born in Tennessee.

I received this information from the U. S. Army Military History Institute and it is also posted on ancestry.com's military records. Am wondering how accurate (honest) the records for the Civil War are. I've gotten records for other ancestors and they have been a wealth of information. Can anyone direct me down another path that might help find correct information on my relative?

Thanks for your time and attention to my situation.

Al,

Perhaps you've found what you need by now. If not, I note that the American Civil War Research Database (a pay site, but well worth it) doesn't show anyone who obviously fills the bill among 16 men named "Samuel Moore" and who died in 1863; however, there are one or two who might.
