The History of Jefferson Barracks, Volume 1: 1826-1894

Jefferson Barracks was founded as the nation's first Infantry School of Practice. Jefferson Barracks continued to be the scene of many firsts as the first five mounted regiments in the US Army organized at Jefferson Barracks and the 38th Infantry (became the 24th Infantry) and parts of the 9th and 10th Cavalry (the Buffalo Soldiers) organized here. Jefferson Barracks' role in the Black Hawk War, Second Seminole War, Mexican War, Civil War, and the various Indian campaigns are examined. Military personalities such as Jefferson Barracks' first commandant, General Henry Atkinson, military pioneers like General Stephen Watts Kearny, Colonel Henry Leavenworth and Colonel Richard B. Mason and Civil War leaders such as Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Albert S. Johnston, Joseph Johnston, Edwin Sumner and Winfield Scott Hancock all served at Jefferson Barracks.
