Welcome to the Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi! This is a place where all who share an interest in the Civil War fought west of the Mississippi River can gather to ask questions, share information, and announce news.
I have an obituary for William Shuck from the 30th IA Inf, which my great grandfather and his two brothers were also in. In the obit it says: "The Train Wreck - And as the war ended, Mr. Shuck was on his way from a Grand Review in Washington, DC to Baltimore when the freight train on which he and his comrades were riding was derailed. He was in a boxcar with over two dozen other soldiers and five of those with him were killed. Bill didn't get a scratch".
Has anyone ever read about this train wreck or know where I could find out more about it?
The train wreck is mentioned briefly in all the various historical sketches of the regiment. Don't know of any in-depth treatment, possibly in Fowler's History of the 30th Iowa, but I don't have a copy of that, so I can't check it.
