I have done considerable research on the campaign of the 8th Iowa Cavalry as part of Wilson's Raid into Alabama in March and April, 1865. Several companies of the 8th, specifically Cos. D and I, attacked the Tannehill Ironworks near Birmingham on March 31, which is the subject of a book I wrote on the subject in 1999 (Tannehill and the Growth of the Alabama Iron Industry).
